Freeboard
In order to ensure necessary stability of the vessel, she must have a specific minimum freeboard. The righting lever (GZ) becomes smaller with reduced freeboard as well as the point of vanishing stability, and as a consequence the vessel’s ability to return to upright when heeled will be less.
Do not underestimate the danger that can result from using an autopilot in adverse weather conditions since it impedes quick responses to control the vessel. The crew should be alerted to all the dangers of following or quartering seas. It can cause excessive heeling and/or yawing of the vessel. If excessive heeling or yawing (change of heading) occurs, the speed should be reduced and/or the course changed.
